This Heavy-Duty 3-Piece Crossmember fits 73-87 GM Trucks & Blazers with a small block engine. Three piece design allows removal of oil pan without removing complete crossmember. Also features an (optional) integrated upper track bar mount for those looking for the utmost in strength when adding a track bar with crossover steering.
This is a Heavy Duty High-Clearance Engine Crossmember for 1973-1987 GM Trucks and Blazers. If you've switched to crossover steering, you know that your draglink will come really close or, in most cases, actually hit your factory engine crossmember! Also, you've probably experienced the dreaded "death wobble" effect that happens oh so often with crossover steering. This is due to the axle actually moving side-to-side under the vehicle while the steering linkage reamins in a stable location (think the opposite of you moving the steering with the axle staying in the same place... if the steering stays put and the axle moves, the tires turn a little too, causing wandering steering with stiff leaf springs, and with really soft, flexible leafs - "death wobble" The solution? A Track Bar (also known as a Panhard Bar in some circles) to locate the axle side-to-side under the truck. This is in wide use in a number of vehicles, even from the factory (go look at any leaf spring Superduty and you'll see one there!)
The biggest problem in adding a track bar to a Chevy truck is how to mount the upper side of it... Clearance issues between the engine crossmember, pitman arm, draglink, etc... and worst of all - frame rails that are made out of the most brittle steel so if you weld or even bolt to them, they CRACK! So we've come up with a solution that works out all these problems! Our crossmember has a number of features that you won't find anywhere else:
- High Clearance Design - Plenty of room for Draglink and Track Bar movement
- Fits Tight to Small Block Block engine with Stock Oil Pan
- 3-Piece Design - Remove only the Center Section and gain full access to your Oil Pan!
- 12 Bolts Hold the complete crossmember to both framerails and both motor mounts, gaining strength over the factory design
- Integrated Track Bar Mounting Tabs to accept a small Johnny Joint (available without these tabs if you don't need them also)
- Minimal grinding and drilling for a straightforward installation
- Works with most vehicles lifted 4" or more (if you are closer to stock height, then order without track bar mounting tabs and it will work just fine!)
Here are some pics of it installed in a K5 Blazer...
